The Growing Trend in Hair Transplants: What You Need to Know

Hair transplant surgery, once seen as a secretive procedure, has gained tremendous popularity over recent years. The process involves transferring hair from one part of the head to areas that are balding or thinning, offering a solution to those seeking a youthful appearance. Celebrities like Joel McHale, Bobby Berk, and Wayne Rooney have openly discussed their experiences with hair transplants, contributing to the normalization of the procedure. This shift has led to a notable increase in the number of men seeking such treatments, as evidenced by a 2023 survey from the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), which revealed that 92% of its surgeons treated male patients, marking a 5% rise from the previous year.

The majority of hair transplant recipients are men, accounting for 87% of the market, while women represent 12%. The procedure is increasingly common, with approximately 703,183 surgeries performed worldwide in 2021—149,254 of these in the USA and Canada alone. The market for hair transplants is projected to grow significantly, from $11.55 billion in 2024 to $44.79 billion by 2033, with a compound annual growth rate of 16.25% anticipated from 2025 to 2033.

Dr. Samuel Lam, a Texas-based facial plastic surgeon and hair restoration expert, highlighted an alarming trend in the industry. He noted that many patients now undergo hair transplants without proper consultation about their hair loss and without the surgeon's active involvement during surgery.

“An alarming trend is patients who now go to perform a hair transplant by a physician who does not consult the patient about his or her hair loss nor is he actively involved in the surgery,” – Dr. Samuel Lam

Dr. Lam emphasized the ethical considerations involved, particularly concerning young men. He cautioned that hair transplants commit patients to future procedures and are never scarless, whether through Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) or Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).

“The most important ethical consideration when working with young men is whether to perform a transplant for them since a surgery commits them to a need for more surgeries down the line and is never scarless whether it is an FUT or FUE procedure,” – Dr. Samuel Lam

He further stressed the importance of medical therapy as part of every consultation, especially for young male patients.

“Medical therapy should be an important part of every consultation, especially for the young male.” – Dr. Samuel Lam

While Turkey has become a hot spot for affordable hair transplant surgeries, the practice is also prevalent in the United States.

“most rampant” in Turkey — where hair transplant surgery has exploded due to its relative affordability — but it is “also extremely prevalent in the US, unfortunately.” – Dr. Samuel Lam

Dr. Patrick J. Byrne, president of AAFPRS, noted that men are increasingly embracing minimally invasive treatments to maintain a youthful appearance.

“Men, like women, want to maintain a youthful, healthy and refreshed appearance and with so many minimally invasive options, more men are embracing discreet, quick-healing treatments than ever before.” – Dr. Patrick J. Byrne

Despite its growing popularity, the issue of unlicensed individuals performing surgeries without adequate supervision persists.

“This is truly a big problem in the industry and can cross legal issues where unlicensed individuals are performing the surgery without adequate supervision or where the surgeon is not even involved with the procedure.” – Dr. Samuel Lam
