Star Wars-Inspired Sea Creature Discovered: Meet Bathynomus vaderi

In a groundbreaking discovery, Southeast Asian scientists have identified a new species of giant isopod, which they have named Bathynomus vaderi, after the iconic "Star Wars" villain. The creature's carapaced cranium bears a striking resemblance to Darth Vader's helmet, leading to its unique naming. This supergiant isopod measures an impressive 12.8 inches in length and weighs 2.2 pounds, making it a notable addition to the known family of giant isopods.

The discovery occurred off the coast of Vietnam, near the Spratly Islands, where anglers trawling for isopods found this peculiar species. Researchers from Hanoi University purchased the specimen at a seafood market in Quy Nhơn City. In collaboration with Singaporean scientists, they identified the Bathynomus vaderi as a previously undescribed species by carefully analyzing its features.

Giant isopods are deep-water creatures that inhabit super deep waters, feeding on crustaceans, fish, squid, and even whale carcasses. There are approximately 20 known species of giant isopods, with Bathynomus vaderi being the latest addition. While it has only been found near the Spratly Islands so far, researchers speculate that it might also inhabit other parts of the South China Sea.

In Vietnamese culinary circles, giant isopods are considered a delicacy on par with lobster. These creatures are a fixture among gourmands who purchase them live from fish markets. In Taipei, an upscale eatery serves this jumbo isopod with ramen for an impressive $65, showcasing its gastronomic appeal.
