On Thursday, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a significant recall of 2.6 million Stanley Switchback and Trigger Action travel mugs. The recall affects mugs sold nationwide from June 2016 through December 2024 at major retailers such as Walmart, Target, Amazon, and others. A defect in the cup's lid has been identified, prompting the voluntary recall by Stanley due to a burn hazard.
The recall arises from reports of the lid detaching unexpectedly during use, posing a risk of burns. To date, there have been 91 reported incidents of the lid malfunctioning, resulting in 38 burn injuries globally. Among these, 11 injuries necessitated medical attention, with two incidents occurring in the United States.
Consumers can identify the recalled mugs by their size and specific product identification numbers located on the bottom of each cup. For the 12-ounce cups, the numbers are 20-01437, 20-02033, 20-02779, and 20-02825. The 16-ounce cups bear the numbers 20-01436, 20-02211, 20-02030, 20-02745, and 20-02957. Lastly, the 20-ounce cups feature product numbers 20-02034 and 20-02746.
Stanley urges consumers to cease using the recalled mugs immediately. To remedy the issue, customers are instructed to visit Stanley's website to obtain a complimentary replacement lid. This measure aims to prevent further incidents and ensure consumer safety.
The CPSC emphasizes the importance of adhering to the recall instructions to avoid potential burn injuries. Consumers who own one of the affected travel mugs should act swiftly to secure a replacement lid and halt use of the defective product until a safe alternative is obtained.
