The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has escalated its egg recall to a class I status, indicating a "reasonable probability" that consuming the eggs could lead to "serious adverse health consequences or death." This urgent recall arises from potential Salmonella contamination. The FDA recommends that consumers either return the affected eggs to their local Costco store for a refund or dispose of them immediately.
The recall involves Kirkland Signature Organic Pasture Raised 24-Count Eggs, packaged in plastic cartons with the UPC 9661910680 and Julian code 327. These eggs were distributed across 25 Costco stores in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. The recall, initiated on November 22, affects eggs with a use-by date of January 5, 2025. The eggs may still be present in consumers' refrigerators, necessitating immediate action.
Handsome Brook Farms has voluntarily recalled approximately 10,800 units of these 24-count egg cartons under the Kirkland Signature brand. In total, nearly 260,000 eggs are subject to this recall. Consumers who suspect they may have consumed the contaminated eggs should remain vigilant for symptoms of Salmonella infection.
Symptoms typically manifest six hours to six days after consumption and usually resolve within a week without medical intervention. Common symptoms include fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. However, if symptoms become severe—such as diarrhea persisting for more than three days, bloody diarrhea, or signs of dehydration—affected individuals should promptly contact their healthcare provider.
