A disruptive incident aboard a Ryanair flight from Manchester to Rhodes on April 3 led to the crew restraining an unruly passenger. The situation escalated when the passenger, who had already had two bottles of alcohol confiscated, refused to sit down during landing.
Witnesses said that cabin crew screamed at the man to get down on the floor and follow orders. Emily Hendricks, a 26-year-old passenger who documented the emergency landing on video, called the scene terrifying and confusing. First, he didn’t obey the crew’s instructions. In turn, the crew secured him in his seat using the spare seatbelts.
We the crew needed to retrieve two spare seatbelts and attempted to pin him down on the seat. That was kind of what happened,” Emily said, looking back on the nail-biting moments before arrival.
Ryanair’s policy of zero tolerance towards any act of unruliness, misbehavior or assault on crew members and/or customers, continues to be applied. An airline spokesperson told us that they’re going to “go above and beyond” after this incident. In fact, their stated aim is to fight back against disruptive conduct by airline travelers. The airline affirmed its commitment to taking all necessary steps to maintain a safe and respectful atmosphere for every passenger and crew member.
The scene, or lack thereof, led to flight attendants to call in for police presence, expecting a much more rowdy welcome when they landed. At Rhodes International Airport, local authorities were on standby to respond and assist evacuees. Once on the ground, the disruptive passenger was escorted from the flight by police from Rhodes.
This is all part of Ryanair’s policies to stop unnecessary chaos on flights and keep the cabin in order. Incidents like these highlight the importance of cooperation between passengers and flight personnel, as well as the consequences of irresponsible behavior while traveling.
