Rescue Dog’s Snack Leaves Owner with a $13,000 Vet Bill

Reta, a former rescue dog, has made quite a ruckus on behalf of her owner, Sarah Oakley. After chomping down on five sets of Skims underwear, Reta has incurred a massive veterinary bill! An emergency exploratory surgery was required to remove clothing from Reta’s intestines. Now this Sarah, a marketing consultant, is throwing herself into finding the funds to pay for that surprise $13,000 bill.

Reta Sarah welcomed Reta, a terrier mix, from Harley’s Dream rescue in January 2025. She did not realize at the time that Reta had a penchant for expensive things. The skimpy undies, created by the celebrity entrepreneur Kim Kardashian, turned out to be the reason for Reta’s situation as she consumed five sets. The enormous size of the collection prompted an emergency procedure to extract the foreign objects from the pooch’s intestines.

Hoping for help with the smokin’ bill, Sarah had a pound of fun contacting Skims founder and biggie Joan Kim, Kim Kardashian. To date, despite all her hard work to get this right, she has not received a clear positive response.

"My first thought was to reach out to Kim Kardashian, but no response yet."

To help alleviate some of the medical expenses, Sarah started a GoFundMe fund. Her plan is to raise $50,000 for the specialized surgery that saved Reta’s life. She has made the campaign one of her key strategies and thus far has pushed the campaign. She wants to get the American people—and maybe even Kim Kardashian herself—on her side.

"Maybe Kim will see it and come through with a solution like an edible underwear line, because, as Reta’s mom, I just can’t afford to buy Skims anymore unless they’re digestible."

The aftermath has brought attention to the challenges associated with the cost of pet ownership. It exposed the unanticipated challenges of caring for a pet with a highly unusual appetite. Sarah’s story is a cautionary tale for all pet owners to be aware of what your pets can get into.
