This Sunday, Queen Latifah will take her final bow as Robyn McCall in CBS’s hit drama “The Equalizer.” This award-winning series is drawing to a close after an amazing five-season run. The network recently announced the cancellation of the show, which first debuted in 2021. This decision is announced following a continued ongoing decline of viewership. That series finale will now act as the epilogue to a tale that enchanted millions.
Also starring Denzel Washington, “The Equalizer” is a big-screen reboot of the 1985 series of the same name that originally starred Edward Woodward. Robyn McCall is a former CIA operative who is a fiercely protective single mother. In return, she dedicates herself to serving those most in need. Over the years, the show gained popularity for its action-packed narrative and strong character development, with Queen Latifah’s portrayal of McCall receiving critical acclaim.
In her farewell post on Instagram, Queen Latifah sounded appreciative. She loved being able to take on such an empowering role. She stated, “Stepping into a kick-ass role like Robyn was everything I hoped it would be.” The actress closed out her statement by thanking her cast-mates, crew, and fans for their continued support — which, as she puts it, meant the “world.”
Compared to its impressive start, “The Equalizer” eventually lost nearly 2 million viewers by its fifth and final season. Despite all this positive buzz, the show struggled to retain its audience. It plunged to fewer than 6 million viewers per episode, a massive drop from 7.89 million the prior season. Such a rapid loss in viewership ultimately forced CBS’s hand in cancelling the series. Curiously, it had been “uncanceled” two times in prior years.
Queen Latifah’s creation of Robyn McCall helped deliver the entertainment icon her first Primetime Emmy Award. Her amazing performance earned her the 2025 Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series award at February’s NAACP Image Awards. Her performance wowed audiences and critics, cementing her place as one of the top stars in all of television.
As she prepared to pass the baton, Queen Latifah promised that there much more to come. Perhaps these new endeavors will live up to the promise of “The Equalizer.” She shared her excitement about collaborating with her team at Flavor Unit, stating, “Shakim and I at Flavor Unit are always excited to bring these kinds of roles and projects to life—and then we just hope you love them as much as we do.”
Looking ahead, she declared, “And don’t worry—I’ll be back kicking ass in something new real soon. Can’t wait to share it with you.” Fans should look forward to more captivating performances from the multi-talented actress in her future projects.
