A new art installation titled "And Now You Care" opened on Friday in Copenhagen, igniting fierce debates about animal rights and modern pig production practices in Denmark. Created by artist Marco Evaristti, the exhibit features three live piglets displayed in a cage made from shopping carts. The controversial piece is designed to highlight the cruelty faced by piglets in the industry, as they are set to starve to death due to a lack of food and water.
Evaristti aims to draw attention to the alarming statistic that approximately 25,000 piglets die every day in Denmark as a result of poor breeding conditions. The artist's intent is to provoke viewers into confronting the harsh realities of animal agriculture, sparking conversations about ethical treatment and the moral implications of mass meat production.
The exhibition has not gone unnoticed on social media, where Evaristti faced significant backlash after posting about it on Instagram. Many commenters expressed their outrage, with one declaring, “WHAT A SICK ACT OF TORTURE OF INNOCENT PIGLETS.” Others urged against the starvation of the animals, highlighting the ethical concerns raised by the installation.
Birgitte Damm, a spokesperson for Animal Protection Denmark, shared her mixed feelings regarding the exhibit. While she acknowledges the indignation behind Evaristti's message, she firmly opposes the method employed. Damm, an ethical vegan, stated, “But we do not agree that three piglets, three individual living beings, should be starved and prevented from drinking until they die from it. It is illegal and it is abuse of the animals.”
Damm further elaborated on the broader implications of the installation, stating that it raises “the large questions about who we are as human beings or want to be, and what we are doing to fellow creatures in the name of enormous amounts of mass-produced cheap meat.”
The provocative nature of "And Now You Care" has sparked a wider discourse on animal rights and the methods used to advocate for them. While some viewers commend Evaristti for asking difficult questions about societal values, others argue that his approach is harmful and crosses ethical boundaries.
