“Pretty In Prep”: The Unlikely Face of Modern Survivalism

Sari Sanchez, a 40-year-old Chicago native, has captivated over 50,000 followers on TikTok with her engaging and educational survival content. Known online as "Pretty In Prep," Sanchez shares essential survival skills, inspired by action movies she watched with her late father. Now residing in Los Angeles and working as an actress, Sanchez emphasizes the importance of preparedness in the face of potential disasters.

Sanchez's survival philosophy is rooted in practicality and peace of mind. She advocates for having at least three days' worth of food, water, and medications ready for emergencies. Her comprehensive first aid kit includes trauma sheers, bandages, gauze, surgical gloves, compression bandages, and an emergency blanket, showcasing her meticulous approach to preparedness. Sanchez believes that mastering basic skills like cooking, sewing, first aid, car mechanics, or gardening is crucial for anyone looking to be self-sufficient.

“I prepare so that I don’t have to face those situations,” she explains, highlighting her proactive mindset.

Sanchez's upbringing played a significant role in shaping her survivalist mentality. Her father, an aficionado of action films, instilled in her the belief that she could achieve anything.

“I was his little girl but he treated me like his little boy,” Sanchez recalls. “I think especially because I was a girl, he was, like, ‘You can do anything. You can survive.’”

Her experiences in Chicago further fueled her dedication to honing survival skills. Witnessing robberies and harassment motivated her to take personal safety seriously.

“I felt like I needed to take care of myself just the same way my dad taught me when I was a little girl,” she notes.

Sanchez debunks common stereotypes associated with doomsday preppers through her online presence.

“A lot of people make prepping a political thing, or they think of a weird guy with a beard living in a hut in the woods with his dog and his manifesto — I think I provide a different face,” she states.

Her content often features videos about her "bug out" pack—a bag filled with essential items that can be quickly grabbed in an emergency situation. She stresses the importance of being prepared for everyday occurrences.

“If you’re in a car and you break down and you’ve got a kiddo, you should know what to do,” Sanchez advises.

Balancing her love for makeup and humor with her serious focus on survival skills, Sanchez offers a fresh perspective on the often-misunderstood practice of prepping.

“I also love makeup, and I love to laugh. I don’t take anything too seriously, which is a nice balance to facing the apocalypse,” she adds.
