Pregnant Women Say ‘Enough’ to Unsolicited Body Comments

Pregnant Women Say ‘Enough’ to Unsolicited Body Comments

Madeleine, who was 21 weeks pregnant, faced an unexpected and startling encounter at a local grocery store when a stranger approached her with unsolicited remarks about her body. The incident occurred when the stranger inquired whether Madeleine's baby was measuring correctly, commenting that she looked "small for 26 weeks." Taken aback, Madeleine clarified that she was actually 30 weeks pregnant.

This unsettling experience is not unique to Madeleine. Another expectant mother shared that she too was asked if her baby was "measuring okay" at 30 weeks because she appeared "small for 26 weeks." Additionally, a third mom recounted being told she looked "pretty chunky" at the same stage in her pregnancy. Such comments are not only intrusive but also contribute to the public scrutiny many pregnant women face regarding their bodies.

Madeleine responded to the stranger's comment by explaining her pregnancy stage. However, the incident left her feeling startled and awkward.

"It was actually one of the most awkward encounters I’ve ever had. I genuinely didn’t know what to say," she admitted.

She expressed surprise that the comment came from another woman.

"That’s something I would expect from a man, not a woman. I was really surprised," Madeleine noted.

Seeking to share her discomfort and raise awareness, Madeleine took to TikTok to recount her experience. She described the encounter as the first of what she anticipated would be many unsolicited comments on her body during her pregnancy.

"That’s all the belly you’ve got? You must be very early on’,” she recounted, illustrating how such remarks can be hurtful and uncomfortable.

Madeleine's story highlights a broader issue faced by expectant mothers: the prevalence of unsolicited comments about their bodies. Many pregnant women report feeling scrutinized in public spaces, pressured to meet certain expectations about their appearance.

"It’s insane! I had a random lady ask me if my baby is measuring okay because I was ‘small for 26 weeks’," shared another mom, echoing Madeleine’s experience.

These experiences underscore the importance of treating pregnant women with dignity and respect, free from judgment or intrusive remarks. Madeleine's call for kindness and empathy serves as a reminder that pregnant women deserve to navigate their pregnancies without the added burden of unsolicited commentary.
