Recent studies suggest that consuming two handfuls of pistachios daily may play a significant role in protecting against macular degeneration, a leading cause of vision loss. Supported by the American Pistachio Growers, the research highlights the eye health benefits of pistachios, attributing their positive impact to the antioxidant lutein found within the nuts. The study suggests that incorporating pistachios into one's diet could improve macular pigment optical density (MPOD) significantly after six weeks.
Pistachios are recognized as a good source of lutein, an important antioxidant that acts like sunglasses for the eyes. Lutein is a key indicator of eye health, measuring the amount of macular pigment in the retina's center.

Nutritional Powerhouse
Pistachios are not only rich in lutein but also packed with essential vitamins and minerals such as vitamin B6, potassium, thiamine, vitamin E, and iron. The natural fat content in pistachios enhances the body's ability to absorb lutein more effectively compared to other sources. Eating two ounces of unsalted, shelled, dry-roasted pistachios daily can potentially double the typical daily lutein intake for adults, which is relatively low in the United States.
"By simply incorporating a handful of pistachios into your diet, you can improve your intake of lutein, which is crucial for protecting your eyes," said Scott.
This improvement in lutein intake may bridge the gap in average consumption, benefiting overall eye health and reducing the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Addressing Age-Related Macular Degeneration
Age remains the primary risk factor for AMD, but other contributing factors include smoking, obesity, hypertension, and family history. Though there is no cure for dry or wet AMD, treatments are available to slow its progression. Lutein intake through pistachios can play a preventative role in this process.
"By eating a small amount every day, you may help protect your vision, especially as you get older," Scott stated.
In this context, pistachios serve as a practical dietary addition to support healthy aging and potentially slow the progression of AMD.
