Nuna Baby Essentials has announced a significant recall of its Rava car seats, affecting approximately 600,000 units manufactured between July 16, 2016, and October 25, 2023. The recall was officially declared in December 2024 and focuses on a critical safety issue where debris can infiltrate the harness system, preventing it from securely buckling around a child. This defect poses a potential risk to motor vehicle safety, particularly due to the exposed plastic buckle adjuster button on these models.
The recall specifically targets convertible car seats designed for rear-facing children under the age of two, weighing up to 50 pounds, and forward-facing children aged two and above, weighing up to 65 pounds. The newer versions of the Rava car seats, manufactured since November 2023, are not part of this recall as they feature a fabric cover over the adjuster button, which helps keep it clean and free of debris.
"The defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, is a result of debris entering the area where the front harness adjuster button is located." – Nuna
Owners of the affected Rava car seats are advised that they can continue using them as long as the harness buckle latches properly. However, caution is advised as crumbs or debris entering the adjuster button can compromise the security of the harness. Nuna has issued a statement indicating that the debris may cause the teeth of the adjuster mechanism to fail in clamping onto the adjuster strap effectively.
"The debris may cause the teeth of the adjuster mechanism to no longer properly clamp onto the adjuster strap, resulting in the harness no longer remaining tight," – Nuna
To address this issue, Nuna is providing a free remedy kit to all affected car seat owners. The kit includes a new seat pad, a cleaning kit, and detailed care instructions. Parents and guardians can request this remedy kit by completing a form on the Nuna website, sending an email to info.usa@nunababy.com, or calling their customer service line at 1-855-686-2891. Importantly, affected car seats do not need to be discarded or replaced entirely.
The specific car seat model numbers impacted by this recall include CS-50-001 CAVIAR, CS-50-002 INDIGO, CS-50-003 BERRY, CS-50-004 BLACKBERRY, CS-50-005 SLATE, among others. These models have been widely used for their ability to protect children weighing up to 65 pounds and have been popular choices for parents seeking versatile car seat solutions.
Nuna Baby Essentials has acknowledged the issue and is taking steps to ensure that their products meet the highest safety standards. The company encourages all affected customers to take advantage of the remedy kit to ensure continued safe use of their Rava car seats.
