A new mental health hub named The Chy is set to open in Redruth, Cornwall, offering essential support to young women aged 18-25. Founded by Sophie Alway, the charity Georgia's Voice aims to provide a safe space for those struggling with mental health issues. The Chy, located at the Village Kitchen Café, will officially open its doors this Friday and operate every weekend henceforth.
Sophie Alway established Georgia's Voice as a tribute to her teenage daughter, who tragically passed away during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. The charity addresses a pressing need in the community, providing free one-to-one support, drop-in sessions, and group workshops. Alway emphasized the importance of the initiative by stating:
"We chose Redruth because there is a real need here." – Sophie Alway
Trained support workers staff The Chy, offering young women the opportunity to develop coping strategies and gain essential life skills. The full-time drop-in hub is designed to prevent mental health issues from escalating into crises. Alway envisions expanding the hub's hours, stating:
"The dream is eventually to have the hub open 24 hours a day so that there is always somewhere for young women to go to prevent that escalation into crisis." – Sophie Alway
In creating The Chy, Georgia's Voice aims to combat the isolation often felt by individuals struggling with mental health challenges. The hub serves as a place where young women can connect with others who share similar experiences, fostering a sense of community and belonging. Alway highlighted the hub's role in building support networks:
"Mental health can be very isolating. It can make you feel very alone and you're the only person who feels and thinks this way when in reality you're not. A lot of people have these thoughts and feelings. This is a place to come and find your tribe, to find friends, to build your support network and to reduce those feelings of isolation." – Sophie Alway
The charity's initiative is a significant step towards addressing mental health issues among young women in Cornwall. With aspirations to expand its services around the clock, Georgia’s Voice is actively seeking additional funding to achieve this goal.
