L'Oreal has announced a recall of its popular La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo Acne Spot Treatment in the United States. The decision comes after trace amounts of benzene, a known carcinogenic chemical, were detected in one lot of the product. Benzene, a colorless liquid that rapidly evaporates when exposed to air, is linked to an increased risk of certain cancers, including leukemia and blood cancers. The recall has prompted the removal of any existing units from retailers nationwide.
Benzene Discovery Raises Health Concerns
La Roche-Posay's Effaclar Duo Acne Spot Treatment contains benzoyl peroxide, a common ingredient in acne treatments. A recent study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology highlighted concerns regarding benzene in products containing benzoyl peroxide. The study discovered that one-third of the products sampled had benzene levels exceeding the limits set by the FDA by over 800 times.
This discovery has raised significant health concerns, as benzene exposure is classified as a known human carcinogen by major health organizations, including the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the National Toxicology Program (NTP), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Industry Response and Safety Standards
In response to the findings, Vailsure, an independent laboratory, released a report highlighting the presence of benzene in acne treatment products containing benzoyl peroxide.

The American Cancer Society has linked benzene exposure to serious health risks, such as leukemia and other blood cancers. Consequently, the FDA has established strict limits for benzene levels in consumer products. However, recent studies have shown that these limits were greatly exceeded in some acne treatment products.
The removal of La Roche-Posay's Effaclar Duo from store shelves aims to protect consumers from potential harm. The recall serves as a precautionary measure to prevent possible health risks associated with prolonged benzene exposure.
