Krispy Kreme has announced a pause on its ambitious plan to roll out doughnut sales at McDonald’s locations nationwide, following disappointing demand since the partnership’s launch. The collaborative officially kicked off in March 2024. It seeks to ensure that Krispy Kreme doughnuts are served at all McDonald’s locations throughout the United States by the end of 2026. Judging by the company’s decision to reset its strategy after demand significantly missed projections, that may no longer be the right approach.
By the end of March 2024, Krispy Kreme was generating significant doughnut sales in more than 2,400 McDonald’s units. Despite this early success, the anticipated growth did not materialize, leading Krispy Kreme to pull its full-year outlook due to “macroeconomic softness and the uncertainty around the McDonald’s deployment schedule.” This decision wasn’t made in a vacuum, and the market’s larger challenges weighed heavily on sales.
Josh Charlesworth, Krispy Kreme’s Chief Executive Officer, expressed confidence in the long-term potential of the partnership and acknowledged the need for adjustments.
“I remain confident in the long-term national opportunity, but we need to work together with them to identify levers to improve sales, simplify operations.” – Josh Charlesworth
The company has stated that it will not add any new restaurants in the second quarter of 2025 as it seeks to stabilize its operations. As part of these efforts, Krispy Kreme is currently “reassessing the deployment schedule together with McDonald’s while it works to achieve a profitable business model for all parties.” This new cooperative approach is intended to combat the challenging sales environment both companies are currently enduring.
The decision to pause the nationwide rollout highlights the complications that can come with navigating large-scale, partnership-focused efforts in the food service industry. Krispy Kreme’s leadership has indicated that while they are taking a step back for now, they remain optimistic about future opportunities to expand their presence within McDonald’s locations.
