Hotel Employee Admits to Wedding Card Theft, Ordered to Pay Compensation

Danielle and Mark Thomson’s wedding celebration turned into a nightmare when Danielle found her wedding cards had been opened. The thrifty couple only spent $6,500 on their wedding. Unfortunately, just two days after the ceremony, participants learned that they had been robbed as soon as they opened their cards. The wedding officially happened on August 19, 2023, and the cards were deposited in an elaborate ornate mailbox. When the couple opened the cards at home, they discovered there was no money inside—with some cards simply being empty envelopes.

This incident, which took place two years ago, was quickly reported to Police Scotland. Craig Harrison, a 37-year-old hotel worker, was seen on security footage rifling through the envelopes. He was convicted and pled guilty both to the theft of $1,200 at Hamilton Sheriff Court. Harrison was directed to pay a total of $1,600 in damages to Danielle and Mark. On top of that, his punishment included a second $1,300 fine.

Danielle Thomson expressed her distress over the situation.

“It was very upsetting. The cards from my dad and grandad weren’t there at all.” – Danielle Thomson

The hotel—which is an establishment of the Macdonald Hotels & Resorts chain—wasted no time in addressing the incident. They eventually refunded Danielle and Mark $2,400 as a goodwill gesture. According to the hotel’s spokesperson, their number one priority is guest safety.

“Our team take considerable care to keep our guests, and their belongings, safe during their visit.” – A spokesperson from Macdonald Hotels & Resorts

Although they were devastated by what had happened, the couple were grateful for how the hotel had handled it and supported them. Danielle told us how the experience put a damper on their honeymoon festivities.

“It was just such a horrible shock. Our wedding was lovely but we never got to enjoy the start of being married.” – Danielle Thomson

Harrison’s conduct ultimately led to his arrest. This unfortunate incident ushered in a larger discussion on how to protect your personal property while attending an event. The hotel’s immediate steps to correct the mistake show their commitment to protecting guests’ trust and safety.
