Hilarity Ensues: Couple’s Unexpected Airbnb Experience in East Sussex

Rachel Wigmore and her partner, Jacob Wyles, embarked on a two-night stay at an Airbnb marketed as a "beautiful, traditional, thatched roof cottage" in Hailsham, East Sussex, England. They booked this quaint rental, boasting two double bedrooms and an electric log burner, to attend a wedding. However, what was meant to be a serene retreat turned into an unexpected comedy of errors when they struggled to locate the promised en suite bathroom.

Upon arrival, the couple found the Airbnb charming and capable of housing up to four people. Despite paying nearly $500 for their stay, Wigmore and Wyles couldn't find the bathroom they were expecting. As they explored the premises, the sliding doors that did not close properly only added to their puzzlement.

“We were searching the place for the en suite. When you find an Airbnb you have to have a little snoop about,” Wigmore recounted.

Eventually, they discovered the elusive en suite in an unexpected place — it was cleverly concealed in what appeared to be a wardrobe space.

“We thought it was absolutely hilarious…. [we] wet ourselves laughing thinking it was the strangest thing ever,” Wigmore said.

The setup was cramped, with a sink facing the toilet, leaving Wigmore wondering how it all fit together.

“There was a sink facing the toilet so I don’t know how they managed to squeeze that in there,” she remarked.

Despite the cramped quarters, Wigmore appreciated the humor in the situation.

“The hilarity of the situation made it quite fun to sit in there,” she noted.

With no intention of complaining, Wigmore and Wyles chose not to mention the peculiar setup to their hosts. Instead, they left a light-hearted comment after their stay.

“It was something along the lines of ‘lovely cottage and great facilities, the wardrobe toilet was a bit of a shock though,’” Wigmore commented.

Though the experience was unexpected, the couple retained their sense of humor throughout their stay.

“Unfortunately, I had … to use the toilet in the middle of the night — so we just got used to peeing so close to each other,” Wigmore explained.

Wigmore, a 24-year-old nursery room manager from London, described their Airbnb hosts as "lovely."

“The [Airbnb] owners were lovely and even though they never mentioned it — it was a funny turn of events for the wedding weekend,” she added.
