Hair Loss Concerns Emerge Among Semaglutide Users

Desiree Rodriguez, a semaglutide user, experienced significant hair shedding approximately 20 pounds into her weight loss journey. This phenomenon is not uncommon among those taking semaglutide, a drug that mimics the GLP-1 hormone responsible for regulating blood sugar and appetite. Around the three-month mark, Rodriguez noticed clumps of her hair falling out in the shower, amounting to a handful. By the ninth month, she had shed 35 pounds and was actively weight training, though her hair loss persisted.

Medical professionals suggest that individuals experiencing hair loss while on semaglutide should consult with their doctors to rule out nutritional deficiencies. Rodriguez's experience aligns with reports from other semaglutide users who have long complained about hair loss. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has received over two dozen complaints regarding changes in hair from semaglutide users.

In response to her hair loss, Rodriguez began taking Mary Ruth's Liquid Morning Multivitamin and Minoxidil, which appeared to mitigate the shedding. She also made dietary adjustments, incorporating more protein and vitamins into her meals.

“After I started taking a hair loss supplement and adding 100 + grams of protein in my diet, I noticed the hair shedding slowing down,” Rodriguez shared.

Dr. Christina Han, a dermatologist, attributes such hair loss to the sudden weight reduction that disrupts the natural growth cycle of hair follicles. Similarly, Dr. Jesse E. Smith notes that semaglutide, by decreasing appetite, results in reduced food intake, potentially impacting nutritional balance.

“Ozempic does decrease appetite; as a result people eat less and smaller quantities,” Dr. Smith explained.

Rodriguez advocates for the importance of proper nutrition and supplementation while on GLP-1 medications.

“If you’re on a weight loss journey, you need to listen,” she emphasized. “You absolutely need to be eating right and taking vitamins.”

The experience of hair loss is not limited to Rodriguez alone; it is a shared concern among many on similar weight loss treatments. Solutions may include incorporating supplements beneficial for hair health and ensuring adequate nutritional intake.
