Fisher-Price has announced a recall of approximately 2.1 million Snuga infant swings sold in the United States due to serious safety concerns, including reports linking the product to five infant fatalities. The recall comes in light of a notice issued by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), which underscores the risk of suffocation associated with the swings when used improperly.
The affected swings, which include popular models such as the My Little Snugabunny Swing and My Little Snugapuppy Cradle 'n Swing, were sold at major retailers including Amazon, Toys "R" Us, Walmart, Sam's Club, and Target from October 2010 until January 2024. According to the CPSC, the swings should never be used for sleep, and consumers are advised against adding any bedding materials to the product.
In most reported incidents, infants were found unrestrained in the swings, and bedding materials had been added, which significantly raised the risk of suffocation. Catherine Frymark, chief corporate communications officer for Mattel, remarked, "In most incidents, the infants were unrestrained and bedding materials were added to the product."
Patty Davis, press secretary for the CPSC, emphasized the importance of proper usage. "Consumers should immediately remove both the headrest, by cutting the tether, and the body support insert from the seat pad before continuing to use the swing," she stated. Fisher-Price further reiterated their safety message by stating, "The swing should never be used for sleep and bedding materials should never be added to it."
To compensate consumers who comply with the recall directive, Fisher-Price will provide a $25 refund to those who remove and destroy the headrest and body support insert. To initiate the refund process, consumers must fill out a form on the Mattel Global Consumer Support website, along with uploading a photo of the removed components. The photo must clearly display the word "recall" written in permanent dark-colored marker directly onto the back of each cut-out piece. Frymark explained that "once the photo is validated, they will receive $25 through their choice of PayPal or paper check."
The CPSC has also advised parents who wish to continue using the swings to modify them appropriately to enhance safety. The swings are equipped with features such as 90 degrees of rotation, two seat back positions, and they can be folded for storage. Although there are "minor differences" in fabric colors and toy accessories among the recalled products, they all share similar safety concerns.
A full list of the recalled swings along with their corresponding product numbers can be found in the CPSC recall notice. Fisher-Price shared this critical recall information through their Instagram account to ensure maximum reach among consumers.
