The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a recall of specific bread crumb products produced by La Fiesta Food Products, LLC, due to the presence of an undeclared allergen—sesame. This recall affects 8-ounce packages of both "Unseasoned Bread Crumbs (Pan Rayado)" and "Seasoned Bread Crumbs (Pan Rayado Sazonado)." The recall was first disclosed on La Fiesta Foods' website on January 25, 2025, and subsequently published by the FDA on January 28, 2025.
This action follows the FDA's recent classification of sesame as the ninth major food allergen in the United States, a change that occurred in 2023. Prior to this update, eight allergens—milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, and soybeans—accounted for approximately 90% of food allergies in the country. According to the FDA, “These nine foods, and any ingredient that contains protein derived from one or more of them, are designated as ‘major food allergens.'”
The seasoned breadcrumbs were sold nationwide from August 29, 2024, until January 22, 2025. Meanwhile, the unseasoned variety was available in stores across the U.S. from April 10, 2024, through January 22, 2025. La Fiesta Foods has stated that the recall was initiated after it discovered that the product contained undeclared sesame. Further investigation revealed that the issue stemmed from errors on the product labeling.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this recall. However, La Fiesta Foods emphasizes the potential severity of consuming these products for those who are allergic or severely sensitive to sesame. “People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to sesame run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products,” the company stated.
In light of this situation, consumers who have purchased the affected bread crumbs are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Additionally, it is important to note that the labels on the affected products do not include the allergen declaration in Spanish.
