Farewell to a Hero: Norbert the Beloved Therapy Dog Passes Away at 15

Norbert
, the internet’s favorite therapy dog, has passed away at the age of 15, leaving behind a legacy of joy and compassion. Known for his droopy tongue and gentle demeanor, Norbert was more than just a pet; he was a beacon of hope and comfort to many. Adopted in 2009 by Julie Steines, he quickly became an integral part of the community, visiting patients at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and touching the lives of countless individuals.

Norbert was a mixed-breed dog who weighed only 3 pounds. Despite his small stature, he made a significant impact as a certified therapy dog, achieving this status by the time he was one year old. Over his illustrious 13-year career, he became known as the tiniest therapy dog out of over 100 in the Amerman Family Foundation Dog Therapy Program. His dedication to helping others resonated with many, earning him over 820,000 followers on Instagram.

Throughout his life, Norbert embraced numerous opportunities to spread happiness. He appeared on popular television shows such as Today and Good Morning America, showcasing his charm to a national audience. Additionally, he was featured in multiple children's books and graced the covers of magazines including Animal Wellness Magazine, Groomer to Groomer, and FIDO Friendly.

Tragically, Norbert was unexpectedly hospitalized earlier this week due to high kidney markers. He passed away peacefully on Sunday night, cradled in the warmth of Julie Steines' arms. In her heartfelt announcement, she expressed her sorrow: “It is with a heavy heart that I write to tell you that Saint Norbert Liv Freyermuth Steines passed away peacefully wrapped in the warmth of my arms last night.”

Reflecting on their journey together, Steines stated, “Adopting him forever changed my life for the better in unimaginable ways.” She emphasized Norbert’s profound ability to bring smiles to those around him, saying, “At only 3 pounds, he showed us all the importance of making others smile. He lived his belief that you don’t have to be big to make a BIG difference in the world.”

Throughout their time together, Norbert and Steines also made a notable impact through philanthropy. They donated over 4,500 plush toys to the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation and other charitable causes, further exemplifying their commitment to spreading joy.
