Dog Owners Go Above and Beyond to Delight Their Pets at Mealtime

According to a new survey, dog parents are turning dog dinner into an entire production. It has nothing to do with their deep commitment to their furry companions. These results uncover a tail-wagging number—48% of dog parents say they have a designated spot or bowl for their dogs’ food. This underscores the value they give to this important daily practice.

The 2024 survey has uncovered amazing new trends in how dog owners are feeding their pets. Better still, nearly four in ten survey respondents enhance their pet pooch’s kibble with other goodies, making it more appealing and delectably nutritious. Furthermore, about 30% hand-mix their dogs’ food to create a more appetizing dish, demonstrating a trend where pet parents prioritize not only nutrition but presentation and enjoyment.

Beyond these improvements, countless dog owners have created individualized feeding practices. 22% of them utter a special phrase or word before they feed their pooches. This practice is a testament to the shifting attitudes towards the sophisticated emotional bond empathizing with the level of connection and understanding house pets. The survey uncovered that nearly 1 in 5 dog owners provide their pet a light meal or snack shortly before their main meal. This delicious sneak-peek appetizer gets the tails of their four-legged companions wagging and waters their mouths.

Fido would be proud that 16% of dog owners get a little crazy. They plate their dogs’ meals like they’re gourmet restaurant creations! Likewise, 15% direct cook their dogs food to a certain temperature before serving. These practices point to a reality where the definition of “dinner” has become an art form for many pet parents.

The survey found an exciting and promising trend among dog owners. It discovered that 14% of them even lay the table and sit down with their dogs to eat at the same time. This unique experience deepens the connection between pets and their people, making mealtime a truly shared experience. An astounding 12% of dog owners allow their pups to pick from multiple food varieties. One in eight serve their pet food with designated dishes.

For many of these pet owners, it’s not just food at mealtime—it’s an experience. For example, nine percent of dog owners sing songs to coax their dogs into eating. Just as concerning, 9% do a jig with their dogs at mealtime to make it more fun. These pastimes only accentuate the playful, often hilarious nature of the lives many pets and their humans share.

According to the survey, nearly half (44%) of dog owners observed their furry friends exhibiting certain rituals or habits at mealtime. This indicates that dogs are pretty clear on what’s going to happen when it’s time for dinner. Furthermore, 58% of survey takers said they spend the majority of their energy preparing their dogs’ food to be Instagram-ready. This just goes to show how much aesthetics play a role in the presentation of all meals.

Significantly, an impressive 69% of dog owners stated that their pets let them know when they are even a minute late in serving food. This acute sense of time, combined with dogs’ desire for order and schedule, underscores the need for regularity and timeliness in their feeding routine.

Carey Tischler, a spokesperson for the survey, remarked on these findings:

“What we’re seeing isn’t just feeding time — it’s a daily ritual that reflects the deep emotional bond between humans and their pets.”

Tischler further added:

“From bowl placements to special toppers and even pre-meal dances, this level of dedication shows just how deeply pet parents care about their dogs’ happiness and routines.”
