A recent incident involving a Delta Airlines flight attendant and a pet cat has raised questions about airline pet policies and customer service. On February 19, Janelle Rupkalvis and her partner were traveling from Seattle to Salt Lake City with their four-year-old, part-Siamese cat named Asparagus, affectionately known as Gus. The cat was secured in a carrier under the seat in front of them when a flight attendant confronted Rupkalvis about the animal's behavior.
During the flight, Gus began to meow, which prompted the crew member to issue a stark warning to Rupkalvis. She was told that if the cat did not stop making noise, she would have to leave the plane. This unexpected ultimatum left Rupkalvis feeling "panicked," despite having flown with Gus on Delta flights previously without any incidents.
Rupkalvis described her pet's meowing as understandable, given the circumstances. "Like, one, he’s a cat. Two, he’s not screaming. He’s meowing because there’s a lot of commotion…This is a scary thing for a little guy who’s sitting in a little carrier underneath the seat," she explained.
After the flight, Rupkalvis took to TikTok to share her experience, which has since garnered over 11,000 views. She urged Delta for clarification on their pet policy, stating, "So I text Delta and I ask them to clarify what the actual policy is, so I’m prepared." She noted a critical distinction in the airline's guidelines regarding pets: "The requirement is for the pet to be passive, not silent. Like, that is a huge distinction."
In response to the incident, Delta Airlines offered Rupkalvis and her partner 30,000 miles combined as compensation. However, she felt this gesture did not adequately address her concerns. Rupkalvis expressed her frustration, stating, "I asked if there was any compensation that we could get because of the incorrect information that we were told on the plane, and how that caused a really anxiety- and stressed-induced situation."
A representative from Delta Airlines reiterated that owners are responsible for ensuring their pets remain calm during flights. Despite the pressure she felt during the confrontation, Rupkalvis and her partner managed to complete their journey without further issues.
