The Darlington Hippodrome in County Durham will host a remarkable event on 21 January, celebrating the talents and abilities of individuals living with dementia. Organized by Robbie Jones, a dedicated volunteer at Dementia Friendly Darlington, the show aims to foster a dementia-inclusive community. Featuring seven contestants, including a pianist, a salsa dancer, and a comedy sketch performer, the event will shine a spotlight on the capabilities of those affected by dementia. All proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the Alzheimer's Society and local dementia groups.
One notable participant is David Young, a 75-year-old Royal Navy veteran who was diagnosed with dementia three years ago. He will perform a comedy sketch alongside his wife and carer, Jean Young, who is equally enthusiastic about the event.
"I'm very much a believer that you should take the positives out of everything that's good in your life and just go for it." – Mrs Young
Mrs. Young, aged 73, expressed her excitement and slight nervousness about the upcoming performance.
"I'm probably more nervous than David, but the audience will have a most enjoyable time." – Mrs Young
The show will not only feature the talents of these contestants but also include performances by the Cuckoo Club Choir, Middlesbrough Football Club Academy's Under-12 Choir, and the Darlington Operatic Society. The town's mayor will serve as a guest judge, further emphasizing the community's dedication to supporting individuals with dementia.
Robbie Jones, the event's visionary, emphasized the importance of showcasing the vibrancy and individuality of those living with dementia.
"It's important that we show what people with dementia can do, that they've still got their personalities and lots of fun in them." – Robbie Jones
The evening promises to be both entertaining and impactful. With the event starting at 19:00 GMT, attendees can look forward to a heartwarming showcase of talent and resilience. The support from dementia groups in Darlington has been invaluable to participants like the Youngs, who have found comfort and camaraderie through shared experiences.
