Tony’s Chocolonely has announced a recall of several chocolate bar varieties after reports surfaced regarding the presence of small stones. To prevent contamination or spoilage, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends that consumers not eat the affected products. These products went on sale in the US as well as Canada.
The recall affects two specific flavors: Dark Almond Sea Salt and the Everything Bar, a combination of milk chocolate with caramel, pretzel, almond nougat, and sea salt. The impacted batches are made up of seven designated production runs. Safety remains our primary focus. The FDA has continued to work with Tony’s Chocolonely to trace the root cause of this issue.
FDA Cautions Consumers
The FDA has placed a very strong warning to consumers regarding the dangers consumers face if they eat the recalled chocolate bars. In a warning notice, officials reminded people to look out for any tiny stones in their chocolate before eating. According to reports, it seems these stones weren’t caught during the third party post-harvest almond shelling process. They factored into the processing of the impacted products.
Third, the FDA issued a critical clarification. They concluded that the inclusion of stones in Tony’s Chocolonely products is not due to a production defect in one of their factories. Instead, it seems to be based on even more upstream stages in the almond supply chain. The regulatory body is investigating this issue on a national level to prioritize consumer safety and prevent similar incidents from happening again.
