Cheryl Hines, a prominent actress best known for her work in “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” has drawn heat for recently attending a UFC event. There, she was gifted with a peculiarly tepid welcome from then-President Donald Trump. The whole matter played out as she simply stood beside her husband, Robert Kennedy Jr. He has already gone on the record endorsing Trump for next year’s Presidential election.
As Trump made his way into the Kaseya Center in Miami, the scene of his unprecedented arrest, he strutted right past Hines. She extended her arm, her palm open for a swift affectionate pat on his shoulder. This gesture contrasted sharply with the enthusiastic welcome Trump received from the crowd, indicating a disparity between public sentiment and personal interactions. In a more positive exchange, Hines greeted Trump’s granddaughter, Kai Trump, warmly, showcasing her ability to connect despite the tension.
Later in the evening, Trump would talk with not just Hines, but Kennedy Jr. As he said these words, he squeezed Hines’ hand. In a particularly egregious snub, he failed to reciprocate her friendly overture to shake hands. Instead, he responded to this call for a handshake with an exuberant greeting to Kennedy Jr., while completely missing Hines’ outstretched hand. This moment served to crystallize both the complexities of their relationship and, in context, Hines’ vocal and public opposition to Trump’s candidacy to that point.
Hines unabashedly opposed Trump, but she was photographed at Mar-a-Lago in November after the election. By all accounts, she rocked the MAGA crowd. Witnesses noted her engaging everyone around her, especially Trump, and holding court. This courtesy reflected her interest in avoiding hostility between the two groups, even if they had to be politically opposed. In fact, Trump’s huge apparent trolling at the UFC event caught most attendees completely off guard. If this did happen, Kennedy Jr. appeared to have taken it in stride, suggesting he already knows what the political game is out there.
Yet the atmosphere inside Miami’s Kaseya Center was downright triumphant, as the former president was met by a raucous reception from his acolytes. Hines did not get quite the welcome from the former commander-in-chief. This approach reveals the complexity of their relationship. From the start, Hines has been explicit in only supporting her husband, effectively rendering her as a vote an unequivocal turncoat.
