This year, Carissa Moore and her fellow competitors gear up for an exhilarating challenge in French Polynesia. The 2024 Olympics will see them taking on the formidable waves of Teahupo'o in Tahiti, renowned for hosting some of the most massive waves ever ridden. For Moore, this competition marks a significant milestone as she prepares to step away from competitive surfing, at least temporarily.
Carissa Moore's journey began in Hawaii, where she first started surfing with her father at the tender age of five. By age 11, she was already making waves in the competitive scene, clinching numerous victories. At just 18, Moore became the youngest person to win a surfing world title, setting the stage for an illustrious career.
In 2021, Moore made history by claiming the first-ever Olympic gold medal in surfing at the Tokyo Olympics. Despite the 2020 Olympics being delayed by a year due to unforeseen circumstances, her determination remained unwavering as she waited patiently to compete.
Now at 31 years old, Moore heads to the 2024 Olympics with a sense of anticipation and reflection. She acknowledges that stepping away from competition will allow her to reconnect with her love for surfing, viewing it not just as a competitive sport but a lifestyle. As she prepares for this transition, she expresses both excitement and a tinge of apprehension.
"I'm sure it's going to hit me pretty hard, but I'm excited," Moore remarked as she looks forward to this new chapter.
The upcoming Olympic venue in Teahupo'o presents its own set of challenges. Known for its intense and intimidating waves, it demands skill and courage from those who dare to surf it.
"I am a little nervous about the venue because it is a really intense, intimidating wave. But I'm going to try my best to give myself the best chance and hopefully, it falls into place again," Moore admitted.
Beyond the waves and competitions, Carissa Moore cherishes her roles as a sister, daughter, and friend. She also harbors aspirations of becoming a mother one day. Reflecting on her journey and the decision to take a break from professional surfing, she shared insights into her personal growth and evolution.
"I've really had to look at myself and my identity and throw myself into the unknown and take a leap of faith," Moore explained.
