Bus Travel on the Rise as Flyers Seek Alternatives Amid Aviation Concerns

Intercity bus travel is witnessing a significant surge in ridership as travelers increasingly seek alternatives to flying. Kai Boysan, CEO of Flix North America, noted a marked increase in passengers across FlixBus and Greyhound services. The ridership for these bus lines saw a double-digit percentage growth year-over-year in 2024, a trend that has continued into 2025. More detailed data will be available in April, providing further insight into this upward trajectory.

Boysan pointed out that the rise in bus travel is due to several factors, including reliability, affordability, and flexibility. He remarked on the shift towards buses, saying:

“Intercity bus ridership has been steadily rising as more long-distance travelers reconsider their options, recognizing buses as a natural alternative to flying or driving.” – Kai Boysan

Many passengers are turning to buses due to concerns about flying, often sparked by news stories about plane crashes, turbulence, and other aviation incidents. Brian Morris, creator of "Flight Deck: Fear Of Flying Flash Cards," highlighted how these reports can trigger aerophobia. He commented:

“In light of the recent flight incidents and accidents, I know firsthand how these events can evoke fear and uncertainty in many individuals.” – Brian Morris

Despite these fears, Morris emphasized the remarkable safety record of commercial aviation:

“Statistically speaking, flying remains one of the safest modes of transportation” — a belief that helps him maintain “a sense of calm and rationality.” – Brian Morris

Nonetheless, buses offer an attractive alternative for those looking for more control over their journey or who prefer to stay grounded. Boysan added that modern bus travel has evolved significantly from the past:

“Traveling via bus is much different than the past and has evolved into a modern, tech-driven experience, offering free Wi-Fi, power outlets and spacious seating that make long trips more comfortable and convenient.” – Kai Boysan

The cost comparison between bus fares and rising airfare costs also plays a critical role in this shift. Boysan noted:

“When you compare bus fares to rising airfare costs, especially for last-minute bookings, it’s clear why more travelers are seeing intercity buses as a practical option.” – Kai Boysan
