Birthday Party Dilemma: Is a Lack of RSVP Grounds for No Party Food?

Birthday Party Dilemma: Is a Lack of RSVP Grounds for No Party Food?

A mother recently sparked an online debate after hosting a bounce-castle birthday party for her 8-year-old child. The party, attended by friends and family, raised questions about etiquette when two attendees did not receive food. The mother faced criticism after sharing her experience on Mumsnet, a UK-based parenting forum, but she stood by her decision, seeking input on whether she had acted unreasonably.

The birthday celebration was meticulously planned, with invitations sent out three weeks in advance to 40 children. The invitations clearly requested that parents RSVP at least a week before the party. Out of the invitees, 18 children from school confirmed their attendance. Along with six siblings of the birthday child and eight family members, the mother anticipated a total of 32 children at the event.

However, two parents failed to RSVP within the stipulated time frame. Consequently, the mother decided not to provide food for these two children. She explained her approach on Mumsnet, stating:

“I also put on the invites that once I got an RSVP I would provide food options for their party food box — this was put on both invites: NO RSVP = NO food provided.” – The party mom

The mother emphasized that the decision was not made lightly. She tailored individual food boxes to accommodate allergies, ensuring the safety of all attendees, including her niece.

“It wasn’t a buffet, it was tailored boxes due to allergies. I am not putting my niece at risk. It also cost me less than a buffet doing the boxes for everyone, and much less waste.” – The party mom

This approach garnered support from other parents on Mumsnet, who agreed that she was justified in her actions.

“YANBU (you are not being unreasonable). Maybe it’ll make them think twice about being so rude in future. If their children were upset, it’s entirely down to them.” – A commenter

The situation has highlighted the importance of RSVPs in party planning and the challenges parents face when organizing events for their children. The mother’s story serves as a reminder of the considerations involved in hosting such gatherings, especially when accommodating dietary needs.
