Bird Flu Concerns Prompt Raw Pet Food Recall: Owners Urged to Stay Vigilant

A Washington-based company has initiated a recall of its pet food products in response to concerns surrounding the ongoing bird flu outbreaks. The recall involves Wild Coast Raw's frozen Boneless Free Range Chicken Formula raw pet food for cats, specifically affecting 16 oz. and 24 oz. packages. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the recall on March 1, citing the potential risk of bird flu transmission to pets.

The recall follows reports of at least two domestic, indoor cats in Washington state testing positive for the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) strain of bird flu. Since 2022, more than 80 domestic cats have been confirmed to have contracted the virus, raising alarms among pet owners and health officials alike. The FDA warns that the virus can potentially be transmitted if it enters the eyes, nose, or mouth of a pet.

“More recently, ingesting raw food that was made with chickens or other birds that were infected with avian influenza has resulted in cat infections. This is why raw food poses some danger and should be recalled if contaminated with avian influenza.” – WSDA

Pet owners whose animals have consumed the recalled products are advised to closely monitor their pets for symptoms of bird flu. Common symptoms include fever, lethargy, low appetite, and neurological signs. The FDA strongly recommends seeking veterinary care at the earliest sign of illness.

“If your cat is showing symptoms, consult a veterinarian as soon as possible.” – Dr. Zac Turner, WSDA field veterinarian

In addition to monitoring pets, the FDA has also cautioned individuals who have handled contaminated products. Symptoms of bird flu in humans can include eye redness or irritation, cough, sore throat, and a variety of flu-like symptoms. Those exhibiting these signs should reach out to their healthcare provider and local health department.

“People who handled contaminated products should watch for symptoms of bird flu, including eye redness or irritation (conjunctivitis), cough, sore throat, sneezing, runny/stuffy nose, muscle/body aches, headaches, fatigue, fever, trouble breathing, seizures, rash, diarrhea, nausea, and/or vomiting.” – FDA

The Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) has advised against feeding raw pet food or raw milk to animals due to the potential risks associated with bird flu. While no human cases have been linked to handling raw pet food thus far, the WSDA emphasizes the importance of staying informed about the risks.

“This is a difficult situation — we love our pets, and it’s devastating when they fall ill.” – Dr. Zac Turner, WSDA field veterinarian
