Authorities Maintain Custody of St. Cloud Student in Disappearance Case

In a developing case surrounding the disappearance of Sudiksha Konanki, authorities have intensified their investigation by questioning Joshua Riibe, a senior at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota. Riibe, described as a "person of interest," was interrogated by Dominican Attorney General Yeni Berenice Reynoso and Navy Vice Admiral Agustin Morillo Rodriguez. The interrogation extended late into the night, concluding nearly at 3 a.m. on Sunday.

Riibe, 22, has been under police monitoring by the Dominican government since shortly after Konanki went missing on March 6. Although he has not been accused of any wrongdoing or formally charged, the authorities are keen on uncovering the circumstances surrounding Konanki's disappearance. Riibe is expected to undergo further questioning on Monday as part of the ongoing investigation.

The case has taken a complex turn as Riibe allegedly informed investigators that both he and Konanki encountered rough surf conditions at the beach. According to Riibe's statement obtained by Noticias SIN, he attempted to rescue Konanki from the turbulent waters but ultimately passed out after swallowing significant amounts of sea water.

"It took me a long time to get her out, it was difficult," Riibe reportedly stated during questioning.

He further elaborated on his ordeal, highlighting his lack of experience in ocean rescues despite having lifeguarding skills.

"I was a lifeguard in the pool, not in the sea," he explained.

Authorities suspect that Konanki may have drowned due to the strong currents, yet they have not dismissed the possibility of foul play. Riibe recounted waking up and returning to his room under the assumption that Konanki had managed to leave the water safely as well.

"I didn’t hear her answer because I started vomiting all the sea water I had swallowed," Riibe added, describing his condition post-rescue attempt.

The Dominican government remains vigilant in their investigation, emphasizing Riibe's critical role in piecing together the events of that day.

"As long as authorities consider Joshua Steven Riibe a key element in the investigation, he will remain in custody," stated a representative for the Dominican government.
