Recent research involving nearly 19,000 individuals diagnosed with dementia has shed light on the relationship between antidepressant use and cognitive decline. Findings indicate that about 23% of these patients were prescribed antidepressants to address depression, a common comorbidity in dementia cases. The study examined the decline rate across all categories of antidepressants in relation to various types of dementia using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) screening tool.
The results revealed a concerning trend: the decline rate for patients taking antidepressants averaged a differential of 0.30 points per year on the MMSE scale. This suggests that while antidepressants are often administered to help manage symptoms of depression, they may inadvertently contribute to accelerated cognitive deterioration in some patients.
Merrill, one of the researchers involved in the study, noted that “one possibility is that SSRIs may influence neurotransmitter systems in ways that exacerbate cognitive deterioration.” This observation raises critical questions about the appropriateness of antidepressant prescriptions for those already facing cognitive challenges.
