Andy's Man Club, a pioneering suicide prevention charity, is making significant strides in South Yorkshire with plans to expand its reach. Since its inception in Halifax in 2016, the charity has been committed to providing peer-to-peer support for men, helping them navigate mental health challenges. Spearheading the expansion efforts in South Yorkshire is Simon Mayo, the area lead, who aims to establish at least eight more support groups in the region.
Starting January 27, Andy's Man Club will host a weekly meet-up at Conisbrough Community Library in Doncaster. This new group marks the fifteenth support group in South Yorkshire, a region noted for having some of the charity's highest attendance rates nationally. Currently, Andy's Man Club operates five branches in Doncaster, four in Rotherham, and three each in Barnsley and Sheffield. The group's success is attributed to its relatable environment where men can share their experiences.
The charity's growth stems from its ability to create a safe space for men to express themselves without fear of judgment. As Simon Mayo stated, "It's just a matter of opening it up and getting some stuff off your chest instead of bottling it up." This approach has resonated with many men across the UK, with over 3,000 attending weekly meet-ups nationwide. In South Yorkshire alone, attendance exceeded 16,000 visits in 2024, highlighting the demand for such support services.
Mayo discovered Andy's Man Club through social media four years ago during a personal crisis. He credits the organization with playing a crucial role in his mental health journey. "If it wasn't for those guys that walked me in for the first time I probably wouldn't be on this earth," he remarked, underscoring the life-changing impact of the charity's work.
The club's founder, Andy, left a career in car sales to dedicate himself full-time to this cause. His vision has helped break down barriers and reduce stigma surrounding men's mental health. Mayo's determination to extend the club's outreach is evident as he declares, "I won't stop until I can get every guy that's struggling through the door."
Despite progress, Andy's Man Club acknowledges that challenges remain. "There is still a stigma; however, it's slowly being broken as guys now aren't afraid to say 'I have got a mental health issue'," Mayo observed. The charity continues to combat these challenges by fostering an environment where men feel empowered to seek help.
