Alcon Recalls Systane Eye Drops Over Fungal Contamination Concerns

Alcon Laboratories has initiated a voluntary recall of one lot of Systane Lubricant Eye Drops Ultra PF due to potential fungal contamination. The recall affects the 25-count Single Vials On-the-Go package, identified by lot number 10101, with an expiration date of September 2025. These eye drops have been distributed nationwide, both online and in major retail stores including Target, Kroger, Walmart, and Walgreens.

The decision to recall the product followed a customer's complaint about "foreign material" found in the eye drops. Upon investigation, Alcon determined that the material was fungal in nature. Though no health issues have been reported to Alcon in connection with this product, the potential risks are significant. Fungal eye infections can be serious and pose a threat to vision. For individuals with compromised immune systems, these infections can become life-threatening.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has advised consumers who possess the affected lot of these eye drops to cease usage immediately. Consumers are encouraged to return the product to the place of purchase for a refund or replacement. Those who experience any symptoms that could be related to the use of these eye drops are urged to seek medical advice without delay.

Fungal eye infection symptoms may not manifest immediately, often appearing several days to weeks after exposure. It is crucial for users of the recalled product to remain vigilant for any signs of infection and consult their healthcare provider if they suspect they have been affected.
