Recent literature has touted Time-Restricted Eating (TRE) as a popular and effective form of intermittent fasting that promotes weight loss. This form of intermittent fasting restricts food consumption to a narrow daily time period. In turn, it will help recalibrate your circadian rhythms, optimize your metabolism, and reduce those late-night snack attacks. Evidence indicates that people implementing Time-Restricted Eating (TRE) tend to adopt eating intervals of 8 to 12 hours. This tactic allows for jaw-dropping weight loss effects after only three months!
Participants experienced continued weight loss sustained over 10 months. This protocol did better than the conventional 3 meals a day. Adherence rates for the multi-day TRE approach were quite high, between 85% and 88%. With respect to the timing of eating periods, this study highlights TRE as a flexible dietary approach. It’s incredibly versatile and can be made to suit anyone’s lifestyle.
Significant Weight Loss Results
In a small but promising study, participants following a time-restricted eating (TRE) regimen lost an average of 3.5% to 4.5% of their body weight. That’s the equivalent of about eight pounds on average. The late TRE group had impressive outcomes. Our 18 month participants lost an average of more than 2 inches from their waist and 1.3 inches from their hips!
Both the early and late TRE groups were able to achieve and sustain approximately a 2% weight loss long-term post-intervention. By comparison, the group that self-selected managed to maintain just 0.7% less weight. Overall, these findings point to the fact that TRE does not just help lose weight, but it helps achieve sustainable body composition changes.
Jonatan R. Ruiz, a researcher involved in the study, stated, “We believe this is due to the low cognitive and behavioral burden of TRE compared to traditional calorie-restriction diets. Participants did not need to count calories or eliminate specific foods — they simply adjusted the timing of their meals.”
Health Benefits and Considerations
Beyond an effective treatment for weight loss, TRE provides additional beneficial effects on cardiometabolic health. Even with cutting food consumption down to just eight hours of eating a day, participants already started experiencing improvements in key health indicators. Like any other dietary intervention, there are side effects. Dr. David B. Sarwer, director at the Center for Obesity Research and Education, highlighted several potential adverse effects. These range from increased hunger, headaches, lightheadedness, tiredness and dehydration.
Dr. Sarwer emphasized that anyone with health concerns should talk to their doctor before starting a TRE routine. “For an individual with weight-related health problems such as type 2 diabetes or hypertension, decreasing intake or not eating at all for extended periods of time can lead to suboptimal control of those conditions and unwanted side effects throughout the day,” he noted.
Even with these caveats, research shows that weight loss was achieved no matter what time study participants ate. Ruiz remarked on the potential long-term benefits of this eating pattern: “We hypothesize that TRE may induce lasting changes in behavioral patterns and circadian alignment, which persist beyond the active intervention.”
Research Insights and Future Directions
A complete review completed earlier this year found that most of those studies oversell the benefits of time-restricted eating (TRE). Often it turns out those effects are reasonably small. The larger, multiyear trials are still sorely needed to further validate these findings. The summary of the review focused on promising findings. Participants in a TRE + Mediterranean Diet combined Lifestyle Education Program saw meaningful weight loss!
Researchers are conducting more studies to understand the effects of TRE on health and quality of life. Supporting their arguments, they underscore how basic dietary interventions increase adherence and long-term sustainability of changes. “Our findings support the notion that behavioral simplicity enhances sustainability,” Ruiz stated.
