CLEAR Offers Solutions for Real ID Concerns Ahead of Deadline

With the May 7 deadline looming for U.S. citizens to obtain a Real ID to fly domestically, many Americans are facing difficulties securing appointments at overwhelmed Department of Motor Vehicles (DMVs). In response to this influx of concern, CLEAR has risen to the challenge. This identity security company, and a 2015 champion of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), has proactively brought cutting-edge solutions to current and future members.

CLEAR offers one of the most creative solutions to travelers who won’t be able to get a Real ID by then. The business’s membership allows travelers to retrieve their TSA-approved I.D.s digitally. Unique to Newark Liberty, this innovation makes the airport security process less stressful — a welcome change for all travelers. As Kyle McLaughlin, CLEAR’s executive vice president of travel and aviation, noted in an interview with The Points Guy, “For those travelers who are sitting here concerned about the news they’re hearing and what the airport is going to look like, a simple Clear enrollment that can now be done entirely remotely.”

With the new Real ID requirement on the horizon, all U.S. citizens are required to show a Real ID or another form of TSA-approved identification. This is true even when flying domestically. You don’t only have to use a state-issued ID. Acceptable examples are U.S. Passports, state issued Enhanced driver’s licenses, DHS trusted traveler cards, Department of Defense ID cards, Permanent resident cards and Border crossing cards, valid federally recognized Tribal Nation IDs or Indian Tribe IDs.

Thousands of Americans are struggling to get appointments to apply for a Real ID. That unprecedented demand at DMVs nationwide is further complicating their ability to attract and retain help. McLaughlin stressed that CLEAR’s solution is to make the travel experience more seamless—not create a new layer of complexity. “You’ll be on your way straight to the checkpoint,” he stated, highlighting the efficiency offered to members.

With the help of CLEAR’s technology, travelers can authenticate their passport without having to take it out of their bag. “The technology that we’ve built to authenticate your passport means that now you can leave that passport at home,” McLaughlin explained. Members should be able to travel through airport security as though they possessed a Real ID. In order to realize this innovation, it’s up to them to get all the steps in place ahead of time.

Travelers who don’t have a Real ID should expect additional scrutiny and be rerouted to other queues for ID verification. As always, CLEAR is committed to delivering a high-touch, seamless experience to all participants. What people can do is fly,” said South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem—so stated as a way to try to ease worries about what’s coming.
