A black family in a peaceful suburban neighborhood faces harassment from a suspiciously watchful — and violent — neighbor. Consequently, this neighbor who mows their lawn all the time usually ends up hurting their grass and making it worse off. This pending dispute has languished for almost five years. It includes lawn care disputes, neighborhood noise complaints, and issues with a family member dancing socially, all leading to a hostile housing situation for the family.
The neighbor takes his lawn armament out in the morning, scalping the grass and using pesticides and herbicides. As a result, it’s turned brown and weedy, taking a beating from a legacy of stress. She just won’t stop mowing their grass—even after the family’s multiple asks and the warnings from other neighbors. She argues that her work contributes to a tidier appearance of the lawn. This has led to months of frustration for the family, wanting nothing more than to maintain their own property.
“Anyway, our nature strip closest to her house, she always mows. We already asked her multiple times to not do it. Sometimes nicely, sometimes we lose it. She just yells saying it just looks more neat when she does it and keeps doing it,” – a Reddit user.
Constant Complaints and Unwanted Attention
The neighbor harasses the family, berating them for all of their life activities from talking too loudly to playing outside after dark. She complains about lights being on after 6 PM but then protests any construction noise before 8 AM. Even social events — like a barbecue at her friends’ on Sundays — elicit her anger.
This invasive behavior has largely severed the family’s social life. They do their best to accommodate their neighbor, only to be greeted with complaints for activities that most Americans would assume are perfectly normal.
“Is that really the way you want to spend your life? Council meetings and diaries about lawns and lawn discussions? I mean, only if you love this sort of stuff, and I guess some people do,” – a concerned commenter.
The neighbor has allegedly used the family’s car as a urinal. This abuse, they say, is reflective of the dramatic deterioration to her state of mind and behavior—which has been nothing short of traumatizing. This barrage of harassment on an almost daily basis makes them feel not only threatened, but imprisoned in their own house.
Seeking Solutions Amidst Ongoing Frustration
Given these hurdles, many in the community have proposed alternative approaches that would benefit the family. One commenter recommended keeping a diary of interactions with the neighbor, which could help document her behavior for future reference. One suggested working with local elected council members to ensure that a low bar for triggering complaints is not established.
“Yep much too short for kikuyu grass. Keep a diary of the times you speak to her, go to local council when you meet the complaint requirements,” – one commenter.
Some have called for a far more passive stance, telling the family to just roll with the punches. Others of you think that by recognizing the neighbor’s weird lawn care efforts, we can convince her to stop being so rude.
“Next time you see her, thank her for doing it. If she’s doing it just to be annoying, she will stop. Thank her every time,” – a third person.
