Martinelli’s Recalls Apple Juice in 28 States Due to Contamination Concerns

Martinelli’s, the well-known California firm with a national reputation for its glass-bottled apple juices, recently launched a product recall. This decision followed a letter from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which expressed its concerns regarding these products. The recall effort began on March 18. It affects particular four-packs of Martinelli’s 10-ounce round glass apple juice bottles sold in 28 states, including Alabama, California, and New York. The action is a result of possible contamination with patulin, a toxic chemical.

The FDA has officially listed the recall as a Class II violation as of April 22. This classification indicates that the product “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.” The recall has been initiated to protect the public health by warning them against the possible health consequences of drinking the contaminated apple juice.

Patulin patulin is a mycotoxin produced by molds like Penicillium, Aspergillus and Byssochylamys. These molds are common on fruit, grains, and cheese, where they can give rise to this toxic substance. According to the FDA’s website, “Patulin is a toxic substance produced by molds that may grow on apples.” Consumers need to be aware of the hazards associated with patulin contamination. This is particularly true when it comes to apple juice products.

Since 1868, Martinelli’s has been bottling their delicious apple juice pressed from fresh, whole apples. Their famous little, round, glass bottles that you instantly recognize have achieved them a family title. Unlike prior recalls, this latest one impacts products found on the shelves of major national retailers like Target and Whole Foods. The recall is limited to 29 states, including Arkansas, Arizona, and Connecticut. It further affects Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

The FDA’s website notes that “in the past, patulin has been found to occur at high levels in some apple juice products offered for sale in or [imported] into the U.S.” For consumers If you have purchased one of the affected four-packs, please return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Otherwise, please follow through on safely disposing of it.
