Bride Faces Online Backlash for Unconventional Wedding Dress Choice

Basak, a 33-year-old bride from London, faced online criticism after wearing a cream wedding dress with visible black bra straps during her wedding ceremony. The small civil ceremony, with just 15 guests, was held on March 29 at Hackney Town Hall. Basak’s decision of the costume led to an uproar online, with people calling her move “tacky” and “trashy.”

The winning look, a bustier maxi dress from high street brand Because Of Alice, was bought for $175. Over the backlash, Basak added that she was beyond thrilled with how she felt on her extremely special day. She finished off her wedding look with a pair of white leather pumps from Gucci.

Basak and her husband, Goksu, found a way to celebrate their union despite the backlash. Complete strangers online went on TikTok to express their outrage over her sartorial decision, making Basak feel like she was being bullied.

“People were saying you cannot wear black to your wedding, they [wedding dresses] are white for a reason.” – Basak

Hackney Town Hall’s stunning landscape offered the perfect setting for the soon-to-be newlyweds’ ceremony. Though there was a lot of harsh criticism on the internet, for Basak, history proved her right in choosing to wear the dress she felt was different.

“I wanted something from the high street, but something unique and I hadn’t seen this dress on anyone else.” – Basak

Basak is looking forward to celebrating her second wedding ceremony in Milan, Italy, in July 2025. She can’t wait to celebrate in an apolitical environment, away from the racist and sexist vitriol found online. She’s provided valuable guidance for other brides who will endure such prying questions.

“My only advice [to other brides] would be to not care what others think if it makes you happy.” – Basak
