As far as Wawa, the well-loved convenience-turned-supermarket chain goes, the state really doesn’t seem ready for its closeup. The ceremonial opening was held in Liberty Township, Ohio, just northeast of Cincinnati. What better way to celebrate than with the news that Wawa is starting its far-reaching expansion in the Buckeye State! The grocery chain still intends to have nine new stores open by year’s end, said the company. The company’s announcement reveals an enormous commitment to Ohio. To do it, their initial projections call for investing upwards of $7.5 million per new store and establishing 45 to 55 locations over the next 10 years.
Wawa has the highest score for customer satisfaction in the American Consumer Satisfaction Index. Last year it ranked No. 1 on the American Consumer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) for convenience store chains, with a near perfect score of 82 out of 100. The chain took notable positions at No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 in various other categories according to the ACSI, reinforcing its reputation for quality service and offerings.
The grand opening event featured an array of community-focused activities, including the announcement of grants to local partners and a “Hoagies for Heroes hoagie-building contest.” These initiatives highlight Wawa’s intent to actively participate in the communities it serves.
In a press release, Wawa President Brian Schaller said the company was excited to grow in Ohio.
“We’re thrilled to fly into Ohio and bring our unique combination of fresh food and beverage, convenience, and service to new friends and neighbors in the Buckeye State.” – Wawa President Brian Schaller
As you can imagine, in recent years, Wawa has been moving quickly to expand their footprint across several contiguous states. Today, Wawa has more than 1,100 stores in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Florida, North Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Washington, D.C., and Ohio. The company is currently lobbying to grow its footprint even more. The company’s plans to expand include opening four to ten new stores each year in Ohio.
This month Wawa opened a store in Bainbridge, Georgia, its ninth state. This announcement further underscores the company’s strategic growth trajectory.
Wawa’s upcoming expansion in Ohio would bring an estimated 2,000 permanent jobs at its new stores. Arguably the best part of the company’s efforts is how they will create positive impacts in local economies while improving customer convenience.
