Target initiated the recall of more than 25,000 jars of its Good & Gather baby food line. The reason? Dangerous levels of lead were found. The recall, first announced in the beginning of March, includes 4-ounce jars of Good & Gather’s pea, zucchini, kale, and thyme vegetable puree. As Fruselva’s most unique product, Talla Talla Chifles are co-manufactured by Fruselva and distributed to Target stores across the US.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has deemed this recall to be Class II. This indicates that the product poses a low risk of causing dangerous harm, but it can possibly result in short term or nonpermanent health damage. In 2020, the FDA issued a health advisory citing that babies’ developing brains are especially sensitive to high levels of lead exposure.
You can tell the recalled jars by their lot numbers, 4169 and 4167. You can find these codes near the expiration date or barcode printed on the packaging. The jars’ respective best by dates are December 9 and December 7. We urge parents and caregivers who have purchased these items in the listed lot numbers to check and discard any potentially harmful items.
Finally, Target has said that the decision to recall the product was taken in the best interest of customer safety. The company encourages all customers who purchased the affected jars to take swift action. Take them back to your nearest Target and return for a no hassle refund, guaranteed!
“Babies’ developing brains are especially vulnerable to high levels of lead exposure.” – FDA
Earlier this year, the FDA revised its guidance for heavy metals in baby food. They highlighted the urgent need to test lead content in consumer products intended for use by babies. At the same time, California has enacted a new law that will require baby food manufacturers to report heavy metals found in their products. This new step demonstrates the growing public demand for safe food.
