Mitchell O’Brien and Breanne Sika have been best friends since their second-grade field trip. Their relationship abruptly changed during a recent dramatic – and scary – encounter along the Lake Michigan shoreline. O’Brien was having an otherwise pleasant spring weekend when he accidentally found himself on the quicksand express. This perilous rescue triggered their suppressed romantic attraction to each other.
As O’Brien trudged down the shoreline, he surprisingly found himself swallowed up waist-high in a hazardous concoction of sand and ooze. Seeing the frightening scene play out, Sika instantly encouraged him to summon assistance. O’Brien, secure in his skills to escape fate, claimed he could tunnel himself out. Sika, understanding the gravity of the situation, described how he was in immediate danger.
“The sand was coming back almost faster than I could get it out of the way,” O’Brien later recounted, reflecting on the urgency of the moment. Realizing that her friend’s life was at stake, Sika made the decision to call for help when it became clear that O’Brien could not extricate himself.
Just as first responders had immediately jumped to Sika’s aid. They made it in time to haul O’Brien from the quicksand seconds before death would have been practically assured, averting a potentially tragic fate. This – in many ways traumatic – ordeal became a transformational moment for both men.
In the midst of the crisis, Sika referred to O’Brien as her boyfriend during a subsequent conversation, while O’Brien reciprocated by calling Sika his girlfriend. In a moment that was supposedly truly surreal, they declared their love for one another for the first time. This moment transformed the connection that had long been buried under their friendship.
“Two years of this guy being my best friend and just trying to hide everything about how we felt and he tried to die on me and becomes my boyfriend,” Sika reflected on their newfound relationship.
