A very sad story from Indonesia where 55-year-old grandmother Wa Siti disappeared while she was working in her garden. Her disappearance took place just outside her home. Tragedy struck when her family discovered her lifeless body ensnared within the coils of a 23-foot python.
Wa Siti was declared missing after her son, Saimin, discovered her basket left empty in the fields. Worried for her safety, Saimin quickly contacted the police. Indonesian Police Inspector One Hardi was the lead investigator probing her puzzling vanishing.
The next day, the grisly find by one of Wa Siti’s sons, La Faru, was unbearable to process. He discovered the python with his mother’s torso stuck in its throat. The scene was gruesome, because the snake had eaten her skull and paid with it, and her visage was smeared in heavy muck. Rescuers worked heroically to release Wa Siti from the python’s jaws. Unfortunately, it soon became apparent that she had already lost her battle against the attack.
According to reports, Wa Siti’s husband only found out what had happened after the python was killed. He was understandably distraught to learn that the bag of snakes his wife had allegedly been eaten whole by a 22-foot python.
Wa Siti’s disappearance raises awareness about the dangers presented by giant constrictors that are allowed to roam at will across Indonesian villages. Yet this incident has not been an isolated case. In October 2022, yet another grandmother lost her life due to a snake bite.
Saimin expressed his concerns regarding his mother’s routine in the garden:
“I was always worried about her working on the farm. I have seen big snakes before. She had worked on the farm since she was a little girl, so she was not afraid. She would always have her basket with her, so I knew something was wrong.” – Saimin
In the wake of this preventable violence, their authorities still hope to understand how such a tragedy could ever occur in their community. The chilling incident is yet another reminder. It points to the ever-present and acute threats that risk emerging at the intersection of wildlife and human activity in the natural world.
