Iconic Taco Bell Location in Scottsdale to Close After Decades of Service

The Taco Bell restaurant number 31—the chain’s oldest and most photogenic location—is closing its doors in Scottsdale, Arizona. This landmark location will soon be added Taco Bell lore. The restaurant is located on the major corner of McDowell and Hayden roads. Since the 1960s, it has been owned by Desert De Oro Foods, a company that operates dozens of Taco Bells across the Southwest.

Despite its undeniable importance, the decision to shutter the hallowed space comes due to its inability to hold them. Over the years, the enterprise has had increasing difficulty serving its expanding clientele. With a small kitchen, an indoor dining space, and a drive-thru, the operation is extremely tight. The restaurant’s footprint is small, but it has continued to operate as a successful 24-hour location because of what the local audience craves most.

As of last month, Desert De Oro was on its 219th store—Taco Bells, that is. This expansion is yet another example of the company responding in spades to changing consumer needs. The new restaurant will be located directly across the street. It will feature an ultra-chic design that embodies Taco Bell’s new approach to branding.

“It’s a flagship location. It was one of the first to be built like this; it’s the last to be built like this; they don’t exist like this anymore,” – an unspecified spokesperson for DDO.

For the community that has patronized this business for 3 generations, the closure represents a deep and painful change. The home base is known for its iconic pink exterior and old timey allure, which combined with its offerings make it a favorite stop for many an influencer. DDO understands that customers deserve newer, more modern facilities that can better serve their needs.

Once the new location opens, the future of their current building, furniture and street sign are all uncertain. The community is understandably nervous about what could happen to this beloved national landmark.

Like most changes to beloved local institutions, reception has been mixed. Todd, one of the stationary restaurant’s regulars, gave us an earful. “I know it sounds dumb to get misty-eyed over a fast-food joint shutting down,” he continued.

Scottsdale residents fiercely love this Taco Bell’s restaurant number 31. Whether people agree or disagree on the closure’s significance, there is no doubt about its importance. For over 30 years, this unique place has been a cherished part of the community’s culinary scene. Regular customers will really notice its absence.
