Kuwait Ranks Least Friendly for Expats for a Decade

Kuwait has once again been ranked as the least friendly country for expatriates, marking a decade-long trend of low rankings in the InterNations survey. This comprehensive study, conducted by the expat guide InterNations, evaluated 53 countries worldwide based on residents' ratings of their quality of life in their respective countries. Kuwait's persistent position at the bottom highlights the ongoing challenges faced by expats in the Gulf nation.

The survey revealed that only about a quarter of expatriates in Kuwait feel genuinely welcomed, which contributes to the country's reputation for being less than hospitable. Many expats report difficulties in forming friendships with locals, with 32% of respondents indicating that they do not feel welcome. This sentiment is attributed to the perception that Kuwaiti locals are set in their traditional ways, often making it hard for newcomers to integrate into the community.

Kuwait's consistent low ranking underscores the broader issues facing expats who relocate there for work, education, or retirement. Despite its economic opportunities, the social environment remains a significant barrier for those seeking to establish a new life in the country. The difficulty in forging connections with local residents is a recurring theme among expatriates.

A Canadian expat in Costa Rica shared a contrasting experience, stating:

“The locals are generally gentle, lovely people. You learn to adapt to a ‘Pura Vida’ life in Costa Rica.”

This comparison highlights the stark differences in expatriate experiences across different countries. While some expats find themselves warmly embraced by their host communities, others, like those in Kuwait, face an uphill battle in achieving a sense of belonging.
