Community Finds Solace in Shrewsbury Bereavement Group

In April 2023, Ms. Game initiated the Shrewsbury Bereavement Group, offering a vital support network for those grappling with loss. The group convenes monthly at the Castlefields Community Hub in Shrewsbury, providing a haven for the bereaved to share their experiences and find solace. Since its inception, around 90 individuals have sought comfort and guidance through this initiative, which was born out of Ms. Game's personal tragedies—the deaths of her two eldest sons.

The group's formation coincided with what would have been the 40th birthday of Ms. Game's eldest son, Ben, who passed away in 2012 due to complications from a double lung and heart transplant. In 2022, her second son, Toby, drowned in the River Severn at the age of 31. Driven by her own grief and determination to help others, Ms. Game created this space for people to talk openly about their loss alongside others who have shared similar experiences.

Facilitated by Ms. Game herself, the group offers more than just a venue for conversation; it has become a lifeline and a legacy honoring her sons. Through cups of tea and heartfelt discussions, attendees from across Shropshire gather to support one another.

Mark Scott, a participant in the group, has expressed how invaluable this community has been in helping him process his own loss. Before joining, Scott felt isolated with no one to confide in about his grief.

"I lost my wife just before Christmas – I've got a good family behind me but no-one to talk to, really," said Mr. Scott.

He appreciates the group's environment, where he can candidly express his emotions without judgment.

"Everybody knows me as 'oh Mark, he'll be alright, he's from Yorkshire, he knows everything, he'll deal with it' – but not really. Not really," shared Mark Scott.

Through the group, Mr. Scott has learned the importance of expressing one's feelings rather than bottling them up.

Ms. Game credits the support she receives from the group, along with her younger sons and grandchildren, for helping her cope with her own grief. The Shrewsbury Bereavement Group has not only provided a crucial support system for its members but also served as a testament to Ms. Game's resilience and dedication to turning personal tragedy into collective healing.
