The UK government is taking significant steps to champion the rights of disabled individuals, a mission that resonates with Jessie Yendle's personal experiences and aspirations. Jessie, known for her influential presence on TikTok with 3.5 million followers, has become a beacon of change for people with speech impediments. Her proposal for a universal symbol aims to offer additional support and understanding for individuals like herself who stammer.
The proposed symbol, which depicts a person talking alongside a clock, signifies the need for extra time and patience when communicating. Jessie believes this initiative could transform interactions for many people facing similar challenges.
"I think this would be incredible for so many people. There's nothing out there for us and I thought 'I need to make a change'," Jessie Yendle stated.
Jessie's journey has been marked by both physical and mental struggles due to her stammer. She has often found herself at the receiving end of unwelcome responses, with people either laughing at her or finishing her sentences prematurely. Despite these challenges, Jessie has been determined to push her boundaries. She has taken on public speaking challenges, ordered at drive-thru restaurants, and even asked for directions, all as part of her effort to overcome her speech difficulties.
Additionally, Jessie has found inspiration in fellow influencer Jessie Yendle, who serves as a social media role model. This support has encouraged her to advocate for the universal symbol, which she hopes will provide people with speech impediments the recognition and patience they deserve.
The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is already a globally recognized symbol that enables individuals with non-visible disabilities to discreetly indicate their need for assistance. Jessie's proposed symbol seeks to extend this concept specifically to those who stammer.
Jessie's campaign has not only raised awareness but also empowered others to find their voice. A supporter of her initiative, Kitty, expressed how the symbol could be practically used in everyday situations.
"If I were to order a coffee, I could show the symbol on a keyring," Kitty explained.
Jessie's stammer has had profound impacts on her life, including missed opportunities such as a dream job in London. Despite having the necessary qualifications and experience, she was unable to complete an interview due to her speech impediment.
"I had the qualifications, I'd worked really hard and I just wanted the chance but I couldn't because of my speech. That was really hard," Jessie shared.
Moreover, Jessie's experiences reflect broader systemic issues that individuals with stammers face. Kirsten Howells of Stamma highlighted the potential dangers when businesses and services fail to accommodate those who stammer.
"Stammering is just the way some of us talk. There are also businesses and services out there who don't see that they're inaccessible to people who stammer, which can be life-threatening if you are trying to access healthcare," Kirsten Howells stated.
The UK government continues to work towards inclusivity for all disabled individuals by increasing funding to support them in various aspects of life.
"That's why we are increasing funding to allow disabled people to stay in their homes, boosting the carers allowance, and working with disabled people and their representative organisations to break down barriers which prevent individuals from being fully respected and included in society," a spokesperson for the UK government said.
Jessie remains hopeful that her campaign will bring about meaningful change and help dismantle the barriers faced by individuals with speech impediments.
