Vice President JD Vance and his family faced an unexpected interruption during their vacation at Sugarbush Resort in Waitsfield, Vermont. Hundreds of pro-Ukraine protesters demonstrated against Vance, labeling him a "national disgrace" and a "traitor." The demonstrators' anger was partly fueled by a recent Oval Office dispute where Vance engaged in a public argument with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The protests, originally aimed at opposing the Trump administration's federal cuts, intensified following this confrontation.
Protesters did not just remain on the streets; some even camped out near ski lifts, anticipating the Vances' presence. The situation escalated to the extent that Vance and his family had to move to an "undisclosed location," cutting short their four-day getaway. They were initially set to stay at a nearby four-star inn but opted for a more discreet retreat due to the heated demonstrations.
“Mr. President, with respect, I think it’s disrespectful for you to come into the Oval Office to try to litigate this in front of the American media,” – Vance
The protests were not solely about Vance's quarrel with Zelensky. Organizers like Ginny Sassaman and Katayoun Lam highlighted broader concerns, including fears over the Trump administration's policies on Social Security, Medicaid, and climate change. Sassaman explained to VT Digger that the protests were a response to the perceived mistreatment of Zelensky by Vance. Lam noted that immigrants were expressing fear over current political developments.
“Some of us are scared about losing Social Security or Medicaid or parks or having measles epidemics or climate change,” – Ginny Sassaman
The scene in Waitsfield was tense, with pro-Vance counter-protesters clashing vocally with demonstrators. Pickup trucks waving "Make America Great Again" flags added to the charged atmosphere as they drove through Main Street. Vermont Republican Governor Phil Scott urged for civility, reminding protesters of Vance's family presence.
“I hope Vermonters remember the Vice President is here on a family trip with his young children and, while we may not always agree, we should be respectful,” – Phil Scott
Vance's remarks during the Oval Office dispute further inflamed tensions. He criticized Ukraine's military strategies and advised Zelensky to appreciate efforts to resolve ongoing conflicts.
“Right now, you guys are going around and forcing conscripts to the front lines because you have manpower problems. You should be thanking the president for trying to bring an end to this conflict.” – Vance
