Laughter Yoga: A Global Movement for Health and Happiness

Laughter Yoga, a unique practice that combines laughter exercises with yoga breathing, is celebrating its 30th year. Originated by Dr. Madan Kataria, a general practitioner in Mumbai, India, in 1995, Laughter Yoga has grown into a global phenomenon. The practice aims to enhance physical and mental well-being by releasing self-generated hormones through laughter without any reason or stimulus. Joe Hoare, a seasoned expert in the field, has been teaching this practice for over two decades, bringing it to work conferences and festivals around the world.

Dr. Kataria began exploring the health benefits of laughter for his newsletter and soon invited friends to join him in a park to experiment with Laughter Yoga. This inclusive practice can be performed by anyone, regardless of age or fitness level, and is often conducted in group settings, such as parks or other outdoor venues. Sessions vary in length from five minutes to an hour-and-a-half, making them accessible to diverse schedules.

Joe Hoare emphasizes that Laughter Yoga is akin to other "wellbeing practices," like jogging. According to him, it has a profound impact on mood and energy levels.

"We know it's going to be good for us. It's going to improve our mood, energise us." – Joe Hoare

The structured yet playful nature of Laughter Yoga allows participants to engage fully and let laughter flow naturally.

"Once we get into the zone then it just naturally happens." – Joe Hoare

Hoare highlights that the key to a successful session is the willingness and intent to enjoy the experience.

"Willingness is the key – and looking to enjoy it." – Joe Hoare

Laughter Yoga serves as a powerful tool for stress reduction and mood improvement. It offers a break from daily stresses, promoting both individual and collective wellness. As it marks three decades since its inception, the Laughter Yoga movement continues to spread positivity and health benefits across the globe.
