The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a nationwide recall of SinuCleanse Soft Tip Squeeze Bottle Nasal Wash System due to contamination with Staphylococcus aureus, a potentially harmful bacteria. The recall, which was made public on Tuesday, affects a specific lot of the product distributed across retail and online outlets since January.
Ascent Consumer Products Inc. initiated the recall after testing confirmed the presence of S. aureus in the nasal wash. This bacterial contamination poses significant health risks, as staph infections can lead to severe complications such as endocarditis, bone and joint infections, and meningitis. Although no adverse health events have been reported to Ascent Consumer Products Inc. in connection with the affected product, the FDA emphasized the potential seriousness of staph infections, particularly for individuals with compromised health.
The recalled SinuCleanse nasal wash is sold in a carton that includes a squeeze bottle and 30 saline packets. It is commonly used to alleviate congestion associated with sinus infections, colds, flu, or allergies. The specific lot subject to recall is identified by the following details: Product Name: SinuCleanse Soft Tip Squeeze Bottle Nasal Wash System, Lot Number: 024122661A1, with an expiration date of December 31, 2027.
The FDA is urging consumers who possess this product to stop using it immediately. They recommend returning the nasal wash to the place of purchase or disposing of it properly. For any inquiries related to the recall, customers can contact Ascent Consumer Products Inc. via email at cs@ascentconsumerproducts.com during business hours, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 30% of people carry S. aureus in their noses or on their skin, highlighting the commonality of this bacterium. However, contamination in products such as nasal washes poses an additional risk, as it can lead to bacterial sinusitis and other serious health issues, including vision problems and cranial nerve damage.
